The profits from the sale of Barker Ten Mile: Stories from the Edge will be shared between two great organizations, Greensboro Farmer's Curb Market's Food Security Program and Robeson County Church and Community Center's Mobile Food Unit.
Greensboro Farmers Curb Market (GFCM) was founded by the City of Greensboro in 1874 and is the oldest farmer's market in North Carolina. GFCM operates as a 501c3 nonprofit organization is operated by a board made up of customers and vendors. GFCM runs a substantial food security program that strives to insure that all residents of Greensboro have access to nutritious and locally and sustainably grown food. Additionally, the Greensboro Farmer's Curb market promotes vendors whos produce and products are grown within 100 miles of the market and use sustainable framing techniques.
Robeson County Church and Community Center in Lumberton, NC operates the county's largest food pantry, assists with utility and rent payments, and seeks new ways to address poverty and other forms of inequality. Robeson County is one of the poorest counties in the state. The economy was traditionally based on tobacco farming and textile manufacturing. Both industries have essentially disappeared. This economic shift along with the back-to-back disasters of hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018) have pushed the demand for its services to a level not experienced since the Center was opened in 1969.
